UConn maintained its perch atop the men's Associated Press Top 25 poll after notching victories over Butler and Georgetown to extend its winning streak to 12 games.

The Huskies garnered 45 first-place votes, with Purdue collecting the other 16 to continue sitting in second.

Men's AP Top 25 Poll

This was another week that pointed to UConn and Purdue being a clear class above the field. The Huskies went wire-to-wire against Butler before blowing out Georgetown by 25 points on the road. The Boilermakers hosted Indiana and hammered the Hoosiers by 20 in their only matchup of the week.

Tourney favorites:

T1. UConn and Purdue
T3. The next 30

Tennessee gets destroyed at Texas A&M tonight, and I'm officially done trying to figure out college hoops this season

UConn's destroying everyone. Purdue's destroying everyone

And pretty much everyone else, can lose to anyone else on any given night

Welcome to the 2024 season

North Carolina and Kansas, on the other hand, both lost and were somewhat fortunate not to go 0-2. The Tar Heels struggled to put Miami away Saturday, and the Jayhawks allowed Baylor to have multiple cracks at a game-tying shot in their 64-61 victory.

"This is probably the least happy I've been after a win because that's not how you play basketball," head coach Bill Self told reporters after the game. "... That's certainly not the intellect in which you are supposed to play. So I'm disappointed we can make those four or five plays that we made in the last minute that put us in harm's way to actually lose the game."

Regardless of how it happened, the result at least ensured Kansas wouldn't slip too far in the Top 10.

Somewhat surprisingly, the AP voters were equally charitable toward Tennessee, who fell from sixth to eighth after losing by 16 points to unranked Texas A&M. The Vols never led and trailed by as many as 22 as they shot 37.1 percent from the field and 27.6 percent from beyond the arc.

It was another tough week for the SEC more broadly. Kentucky has dropped four of its last six after Gonzaga left Lexington an 89-85 winner. Auburn was handed a heavy 81-65 defeat by Florida. South Carolina (No. 11) is now the second-highest-ranked representative from the conference.

Things are even worse in the Big Ten, where Purdue is tightening its grip on first place. The Boilermakers are up 2.5 games over Illinois, which lost to Michigan State on Saturday. Wisconsin, meanwhile, is three games back amid a four-game losing streak.

On Tuesday, the Badgers host Ohio State, which was in an even worse free fall before outlasting Maryland in two overtimes.

Auburn has a chance to make a statement in the wide-open SEC title race. The Tigers host South Carolina on Wednesday and then Kentucky on Saturday. This time next week they might have sole possession of first place and a top-10 ranking again.

The week's most consequential contest comes Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut.

Marquette has come a long way from a 2-3 start to Big East play, which had the Eagles sitting all the way down in 17th. But their last ranked win was back in December against Creighton. Upsetting UConn at XL Center would show the team's recent surge is real.
